Antiqued Peg Shelf
A peg shelf or coat rail provides a good place to hang coats and umbrellas in a foyer or back entryway. Cindy Piccoli, host of HGTV's Decorating With Style , shows how to antique a peg shelf with paint and sand for a casual hang-up.

  1. Remove the pegs from the peg shelf. Apply a base coat of black latex paint to the shelf. Let dry.

  2. Paint the shelf with a coat of shellac sanding sealer. Wear a mask and gloves while working with the sealer, and do not store it in plastic containers, as the sealer will eat through plastic.

  3. Before the sealer dries, sprinkle sand over the wet surface. Let dry.

  4. Once dry, coat the sand-imbedded surface with yellow paint. Let dry.

  5. Remove some of the paint from the shelf to give it an aged look. Use a file on the edges and steel wool or sandpaper on the flat surfaces.

  6. Stain the pegs with a dark wood stain and let dry. A good way to stain or paint small items such as pegs is to stick them in a fat piece of Styrofoam to hold them in place.

  7. Replace the pegs in the shelf, using wood glue to hold them in place.

  8. Seal the finished shelf with furniture wax or acrylic paint-sealer.
Note:
  • Any dark base coat with a light top coat would work for this project (a maroon base coat topped with a lighter-toned green would work well).
